• Question: do you think being a female scientist affects your career

      It hasn’t affected my career so far and there are far more women in science than there ever used to be. I think one of the main problems of being a women is that when you have time off to have children it leaves a gap in your publication record which in the competative world of getting funding etc. can cause problems. I’m not sure how much of a problem is it as I haven’t experienced it yet. I think Lori-An has children so she might be able to give you a better idea. 🙂

      I don’t think being a female in science affects my career in comparison to males. I think if we were having the same discussion even 30years ago the answer would have been different though. Following on from Michelles answer, I have a daughter but I only took 4 months off work so it didn’t affect my career at all. Some women decide to take much longer breaks in their careers to raise their families and there are now special grants and funding in place for women trying to get back into science in this situation.
