I am involved in the very early stages of drug development and I look at a chemicals effect on how cells communicate with each other. The laboratory model that I use has been shown to represent some aspects of learning and memory that are seen in animal behaviour studies. I apply the drugs to my model and if they strengthen the cellular pathway that I am looking at it suggests that they are effective and they are then considered for further testing.
Hope this helps
I would then cross that drug off the list. Ethics committees only allow you to test drugs on people who have a strong likelihood of dying, or their tumour growing.
Basically, if all else fails and the Dr is 99% sure you will die soon, then and only then will a test drug be offered to you.
