There are less job opportunities around at the moment and the ones that are available are often more difficult to get. Fortunately, the current government doesn’t look like it will cut Science funding, as was previously feared. But we’re not through the worst of the recession yet I don’t think.

Luckily my research has not been directly affected by the recession (so far). It has been more difficult to get funding in research in the recession overall though

For me not really. In most university research, the money comes from funding groups like charities but also some government funding. This come in blocks – usually of about 5 years, so the money being spent on my salary and my work was given to my boss by a funding group about 3 years ago – so at the moment all the work in my group and the people being employed are OK. But when my boss applies for his next block of money in about a year and a half, that’s when he might find there have been cuts and he can’t get all the money he needs to keep the whole team employed, or to keep all the projects going. So there’s a bit of a time delay.

It’s made me work harder – lots of my friends are job-hunting.
