Hello, I earn about £30,000 a year (before tax), this is about the standard wage for a Postdoctoral researcher with 5years experience – unless you are in London and you would get a bit more. The starting salary for a Postdoc (ie, just after finishing the PhD) is about £25,000. It all varies a bit on who is funding the project though, and this is based on academic research.

The starting point for a scientist in my area with a PhD is about what a teacher would get after about 3 or 4 years in the job, now I’m on what a teacher would be on after about 6 years in the job – you can find that out on the internet if you’re clever…

For me it’s plenty to live comfortably, but if you want big bucks then science probably isn’t the way to go!

I earn enough to have a nice lifestyle and go on a good holiday each year but it would always be nice to earn more and hopefully when I’ve completed my PhD I will be able to.
