The probably with most harmful drugs is, the harm comes from the fact that they are TOO effective.

For instance heroin, it’s so effective at what it does, people forget about everything else that used to be important to them. They no longer care about there family, kids, eating, washing, friends, career. It all goes out the window in a nasty cycle of destruction.

Remember, theses drugs are illegal not just because of overdoses or the spread of disease (which are pretty terrible) but also because they are too effective and powerful. You need to take this all very seriously.

Unfortunately often the symptoms of some of the most dangerous drugs such as heroin or cocaine are also related to the harmful effects, for example the high experienced by these drugs is also related to addiction. There are interventions that are being developed though – such as the cocaine vaccine – which stops addicts feeling the ‘high’ from the drug so they are less likely to want to take it. In developing drugs for medical use this is exactly what researchers are trying to find – effective drugs which are not addictive and have few side effects.
      Hope this helps
