The three R’s are used as a guideline to minimise the use of animal testing so that unnecessary experiments are avoided. They are:
Replacement – where possible trying to use non animal methods to get the same results
Reduction – Trying to design experiments to use as few animals as possible to get the results required
Refinement – Finding ways to minimise an animals distress if it must be used
      Hope this helps

The Three Rs are a set of criteria that scientists have to consider when they plan their experiments to ensure that they do them in the kindest and most effective way. They were were developed over 50 years ago but have only recently been widely accepted. They can be defined as:
      • Reduction – Minimising the number of animals used in each experiment
      • Refinement – Using methods in experiments on animals that ensure that the welfare of the animal is maximized and any pain or distress it might suffer is minimised
      • Replacement – Changing from experiments and studies on animals to experiments using alternative methods without animals.

If you would like some examples let me know

The three Rs are the foundations of a basic skills oriented education program within schools: Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic.

The phrase is attributed to a toast given by Sir William Curtis around 1825. Since its original creation, many others have created alternative new words for what the R’s stand for – but Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic are the most widely accepted ones. ( see alternative answers above!)
