At GCSEs I did well in science and maths and so I decided to carry on with these for A levels (I did Maths, Chemistry and Biology). I still wasn’ t sure what to do but I went on to University and was initially enroled to study Anatomy and Physiology. The Uni course was quite flexible and when I found I was enjoying Pharmacology in my second year I switched course. During my third year I became really interested in the course and loved learning about how drugs affect the body, in particular the brain. In the fourth (final) year we had the chance to do laboratory experiments and I found that I was enjoying myself (more than I had expected) and after finishing the degree I stayed on to do a PhD. The PhD is much more like a job (with a great big essay that has to be written at the end along with an oral exam) and I thought that I would like to carry on with the same type of work once I finished. That’s how I ended up a scientist.

I think there were many reasons, but curiosity is the main one, I’ve always enjoyed learning and finding new things out, so Science seemed like the best career to pursue.
