The biggest place that I have been for a conference was in America run by the Society for Neuroscience, they hold it every year and there are only 5 venues big enough to host it as there are about 40,000 people who go. I have been twice, once in New Orleans and once in Atlanta – it was an amazing experience. The most unusual place was the House of Commons to present my work to members of parliament, which was completely different from what I usually do, but fun (an a bit nerve-racking)

The best place I’ve been to is the Google headquarters (the “Googleplex”) in Silicon Valley, California – not far from San Francisco for a conference about science and technology. It was interesting to see where Google started and what it looks like behind the scenes. There were lots of different people presenting weird and wonderful things from around the world.

The most exciting thing I’ve presented – I’ve found it fun talking about a project I’ve been involved in called http://www.myexperiment.org to various groups of people because its an interesting idea. We’re trying to get scientists to make more use of online tools to share and exchange their work on the Web. Despite the fact that the web was invented by a scientist for use by scientists in the laboratory – many scientists do not use the full power of web technology in their daily laboratory work. MyExperiment is a project that is trying to change this, and many of the problems we are facing are social ones, rather than technical ones.

Best place was a conference in a ski resort in Switzerland – unfortunately at the time I couldn’t ski so just stayed inside trying to chat to Japanese scientists. The most exciting thing I presented was finding a new way that some cells used to add sugar onto some proteins.
