      It depends on the disease and the functions in the body that it affects so it has to be assessed on a case by case basis.
      Ultimately the best way to see how a drug works is to test it on humans.

      This is a good question, different animals have been shown to represent certain human characteristics – one example is that rabbits are used as a safety test to see how drugs affect the heart rhythm as it apparently is the best approximation of humans in this respect. In the UK over three quarters of the animals used in research are mice or other rodents. There is a very good website which has a lot of information on this topic and I will paste the link below:
