Darren – I don’t think that gathering data is the key step – it’s using that data to test, refine or create hypotheses that is important. Francis Bacon (a 17th century English philosopher/scientist) was big on collecting facts, tabulating and classifying them, but I think that its the underlying organizing principles that are more interesting.
Nsam – Crushing bacteria get the bits inside (like the DNA and RNA) out so that you can measure them.
