There is very strict regulations covering any project that involves the use of human volunteers or animals. In the UK there are three separte licences which are required to do any research involving animals (for the individual researcher, the project and plan of work), with licences only being given if ethical boards feel that the results are important enough to justify using animals or human volunteers. In animal studies distress is always kept to a minimum in research using such things as anaesthetics, painkillers or other techniques. What people do for their job is obviously a personal decision and I feel strongly that the development of new medicines or understanding how diseases happen is a worthwile cause. However, for me there are certain jobs in science that I wouldn’t want to do myself (such as behavioural studies) as this does not fit in with my personality.

If the Ethics Committee approves, lets roll!
